Clean Leash was created after founder Jocelyn, a lifelong vet-world professional, found herself in the ER with a monstrous rash encircling both her legs—the diagnosis - poison ivy - from her dog's leash. The painful experience of driving around in her bed sheets with a dripping rash for weeks was more than a wake-up call to just how dangerously dirty leashes can be.

The science is frightening. The woven fibers of most dog leashes are a petri-dish of problematic microbes: E. Coli, parvovirus, salmonella, heartworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms, viruses, harmful bacteria, poisonous oils, urine, and infected feces - traditional leashes absorb and easily transmit. 

She tried washing them in her washing machine. Hearing the banging and clanging of one leash was loud enough, with the six dogs that Jocelyn walks regularly, damage was imminent. Aware of the biological matter on her dog’s leash, using the dishwasher wasn't a practical option either. At the time, not a single leash on the market offered the ability to remove the hardware and wash the strap itself. Washing and re-washing were quickly fading her existing leashes. The dedication to trying to keep them clean using all sorts of soaking methods and chemical cleaning products was daunting, offensive, and seemingly pointless, as it never resulted in an immaculate result. The leashes seemed to be more worn and continued to smell dingy.

She bagged up her piles of fabric/woven leashes and immediately switched to plastic options following the experience.  They passed the scratch-and-sniff test, but at the expense of style and control. These leashes slipped out of her hands. 

Still wishing there was an easier way to ensure that her leashes remained safe, a concept crossed her mind—a machine-friendly leash with removable hardware.  

After a few prototypes and a year's worth of test-washes, Clean Leash was certifiably durable and uniquely easy to clean and maintain. She was hooked and ready to share her idea with the world.

She set out to customize the most hygienic leash on the market, beginning with the material—no more banging and clanging and damage to her washing machine. 

Backed by SGS-certified REACH and RoHS testing, our materials meet strict safety standards, meaning no heavy metals, phthalates, or other restricted substances.
